2009 Awards: President Mary McAleese

On the 14th of December Liberties held its annual Training awards for our employees in recognition of FETAC and other Certified training completed. We were very happy to have the President of Ireland Mary McAleese in attendance. It was great recognition for the project, but more importantly recognition for the work of the employees themselves and their achievements.
In total 100 awards were made, 64 FETAC Awards and 36 other awards ranging from Forklifts, Manual Handling, SAGE Payroll and TAS books.
This year we were proud to have our first employee gain a FETAC Major Award at level 3, having completed 8 FETAC modules. Also one employee having comleted their C.E. time has moved on to study business at Inchicore College, and two current employees have taken up evening courses at 3rd level, studying accounting and computers.

The number of leaflets and collection bags people now receive through their letterboxes asking for used clothing is staggering. It is important to be able to recognise a genuine charity from a bogus collector. Generally a reputable charity will have the following information on their bags or leaflets:
  1. The name and address of the charity
  2. The landline telephone number (not a mobile)
  3. An Irish charity number, such as CHY 14553
Click on the door-to-door collections link on the homepage to view the Liberties Recycling Training & Development collection bag.
Please remember the income Liberties Recycling generates from your clothing donations supports the work of the organisation in preparing people affected by drugs for mainstream opportunities including employment.

Did you know?
  • 15% of household rubbish is made up of textiles, i.e. clothing, footwear, bedding, etc.
  • In 2007 234, 000 tones of textiles were sent to landfill while only 11,000 were recycled
(Source: EPA 2009).

Liberties Recycling works with schools in the Greater Dublin area to organize collections of used clothing by pupils and staff in return for donations to school funds. This scheme encourages school children to recycle while generating funds for school activities. Collections are organized in each school two to three times a year. We provide our collection bags and some promotional material explaining the scheme and organize collections in conjunction with the school.

The scheme is proving popular with over 20 schools currently participating. If your school would like to participate please contact us for more information.
